How to create an EROAD API key

To create an EROAD API key, sign in to MyEROAD and go to Settings → Administration → Integrations → API Keys, then choose "Create new API Key". Copy the key straight away, because it is only shown once. You need an EROAD plan that includes API access (Premium) and the Client Administrator role.

What you need first

An EROAD plan with API access. API keys are part of EROAD's Premium plan. If your plan does not include it, the API Keys page will not appear.
The Client Administrator role in MyEROAD. Ordinary users cannot see or create keys.
A few minutes. The whole process takes about two minutes.

Step by step

Open my.eroad.com (or the address you normally use for MyEROAD) and sign in, then follow these steps.

Sign in to MyEROAD. Open MyEROAD in your browser and sign in.
Open Settings. Select Settings from the main menu.
Go to Administration. Inside Settings, open Administration.
Open Integrations. Under Administration, choose Integrations.
Open API Keys. Select API Keys. This is where every key for your organisation is listed.
Create a new API key. Choose "Create new API Key", give it a name you will recognise later, such as "EROAD MCP".
Copy the key immediately. The full key is shown once. Copy the whole value now. If you lose it, delete that key and create another one.
Paste it into EROAD MCP. Sign in at eroadmcp.co.nz and paste the key. We check it against EROAD straight away and tell you how many vehicles we found.

Troubleshooting

"EROAD rejected this key." The most common cause is a partial copy. Copy the whole value, with no spaces before or after it. If it still fails, create a new key and try that one.
There is no API Keys option. Your plan probably does not include API access. Ask your EROAD account manager about the Premium plan.
You cannot open Administration. You do not have the Client Administrator role. Ask a colleague who does to create the key and pass it to you securely.
You lost the key. Keys cannot be shown again. Delete the old one in MyEROAD and create a replacement.

Keeping the key safe

Treat an API key like a password. Do not email it, do not paste it into a chat message, and do not store it in a shared document. When you paste it into EROAD MCP it is encrypted before it is stored and never shown again. If you ever want to cut access off, delete the key in MyEROAD — that stops it working everywhere, immediately.

Keys stay valid until someone deletes them in MyEROAD. Deleting a key immediately stops anything using it, including EROAD MCP.

Is it safe to give my API key to EROAD MCP?

The key is encrypted before it is stored and is never displayed again. It is used only to read data. Every tool we expose is read-only, so nothing in your EROAD account can be changed, and you can delete the key in MyEROAD at any time to revoke access.
